Standards data not helping teachers
The NZEI primary teachers union says National Standards will do nothing to raise achievement, and yesterday’s data dump was meaningless.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says the aggregate data for 2011 released yesterday can be used to target resources to areas where extra support is needed.
But NZEI President Judith Nowotarski says teachers don’t need that sort of data to tell them what can be done to help their pupils reach their potential.
"The difficulty is that it takes time and resources, and I'm not just talking money resources. I'm talking the ability to have other people in the room to help you do that, the ability to have a small group to work with because it's the individualised personalised learning that really supports tamariki to achieve their best," she says.
Ms Nowotarski says National Standards is proving to be a massive waste of resources.
