Treasures of ancestors on display
Tāonga Māori from the Sir George Grey Special Collections will go on display at the Auckland Central Library from tomorrow.
Curator Robert Eruera, the Māori heritage librarian, says they include nationally significant artefacts, handwritten manuscripts, letters, diaries, maps and photographs that record the events of 19th century Māori.
He says many of the items have never been displayed, though they have been available for those who want to see ‘Manatunga’, Ko ngā tāonga waihohanga atu ki te arawhiti: The treasures left behind in this realm,’ as the show is called.
They have been used not just by academics but by tribal members who want to know more about what their ancestors left for them.
An online version of the exhibition will go up on the Auckland library site tomorrow.
