Advance voting starts in Ikaroa Rāwhiti
Advanced voting starts today in the Ikaroa Rāwhiti by-election.
Labour candidate Meka Whaitiri says she will be at Flaxmere Public Library at 10am to cast an early vote.
She’s keen to get more rangatahi and first time voters engaged in the process, but many are still not enrolled to vote so will need to make a provisional vote if they sign up now.
There will be no booths outside the electorate on June 29, so anyone who will not be in
Ikaroa Rāwhiti on polling day needs to vote early.
Voter turn-out in Ikaroa Rāwhiti in 2011 was only 58.8 percent, one of the lowest in the country.
Ms Whaitiri is also encouraging Māori to switch to the Māori roll in the current electoral option.
Meanwhile Labour MP Nanaia Mahuta is dismissing polls putting Mana candidate Te Hamua Nikora ahead.
She says many of those who participated live in urban centers like Auckland or overseas.
The online polls are unscientific and subject to huge variability.
