Iwi fishing threat to fishing profits
The country’s largest iwi is accusing politicians of hypocrisy for their crackdown on foreign charter fishing boats.
Ngapuhi Chief Executive George Riley told parliament’s primary production select committee that the ban on foreign-flagged boats in the deepwater fishery could halve the rūnanga’s return from its fish quota.
The bill is in response to newspaper reports and an Auckland University Business School study into working conditions on some of those boats, particularly those leased from South Korean companies.
Mr Riley says there is no similar scrutiny of the unseen costs of the pollution caused by dairying, nor is there any crack-down on the clothing trade’s use of Asian sweatshops to source low cost product.
