Tararua District Council is putting $10,000 into formally recognizing and recording Rangitane ancestral sites and waahi tapu in the region.
Chief executive Blair King says it will work with Dannevirke-based Rangitane ō Tamaki-nui-ā-Rua on the project.
Steps are underway for a similar project with Ngāti Kahungunu.
Mr King says the need for recording sites was highlighted by a recent roading project that came uncomfortably close to a site of cultural importance.
