Charter schools selling out kura kaupapa
Mana leader Hone Harawira says the Māori Party failed Māori education when they voted to enable charter schools.
With independent MP Peter Dunne opposing the Education Amendment Bill, it was the Māori Party’s votes that got the proposal for publicly-funded private schools across the line.
Mr Harawira says the schools will inevitably bleed money away from kura kaupapa Māori, and the Māori Party failed to get any other guarantees or programmes through as the price of their support.
"They’ve supported charter schools, taking money from the pool that will affect kura kaupapa Māori. Now, if that's their game, to support something unknown over a known success for Māori, that's not me bro and I'll oppose it until the cows come home," he says.
