State support absent in Tūhoe trauma
Tūhoe negotiator, Tamati Kruger, says the iwi is wary about expecting too much from the Crown.
The police are discussing an apology in the wake of an Independent Police Complaints Authority finding they acted illegally in detaining people at gunpoint at Ruatoki in October 2007.
Mr Kruger says the way police went about arresting the small number of people in the area involved in armed training camps in Te Urewera, traumatised the whole community.
He says it’s not the first time Tūhoe has been attacked by the Crown, and it was told it had to wait for due process.
"In that time there have been a short number of organisations and non-Tūhoe groups that have volunteered to come in and help. Sadly, government agencies and departments were not part of that. They did not volunteer any support," he says.
Tūhoe is in no hurry to have the police tender an apology.
