George Grey collection to go on display
Tāonga Māori collected by one of New Zealand’s first governors and premieres will go on display for the first time next month at the Auckland Central Library.
Māori heritage librarian, Robert Eruera, says the items from the Sir George Grey Special Collections include nationally significant Māori artifacts, handwritten manuscripts, letters, diaries, maps and photographs that record the events of 19th century Māori.
The display will include a letter and seal from King Tawhiao, as well as the Tui and Titore sketches drawn in 1818, which are the earliest recorded handwritten paper works from Maori.
It will open on June 12 as part of the council’s Matariki celebration and run for four months.
