King’s team to review Tainui structure

King Tuheitia has called a hui a iwi for next Saturday to win support for a review of Waikato-Tainui’s governance and representation structures.
The review will be overseen by a sponsor group including the king, executive chair Tom Roa, former chair Tukoroirangi Morgan, Sir Henry Van Der Heyden from Tainui Group Holdings and MP Nanaia Mahuta.
A group of tribal officials and consultant, Tania Simpson, will work on replacement options for Te Kauhanganui, the tribal parliament which includes three members from each of Tainui’s 67 marae.
Ms Mahuta says that structure has been around since 1996 and needs to change.
"People have moved on. We've got some very complex commercial and development aspirations but they want to see more of a convergence of those two rather than operating in silos. The real litmus test is the benefit back to the people. People want to see some increasingly more tangible outcomes," she says.
Ms Mahuta says Te Kauhanganui members want to retain a clear sense of democracy in decision making and representation, but whether that is at the marae level or elsewhere needs to be discussed.
