Education lobby welcomes budget spending
Iwi education advocacy group, Ngā Kaikokiri Mātauranga, is welcoming spending on Māori education in the 2013 budget.
Welcomes Budget 2013 Spend on Māori Education is pleased to see the Government has heeded many of the calls iwi have been making to improve Māori educational achievement.
Spokesperson Awanui Black says the budget shows alignment with iwi education priorities.
He says with one in three Māori learners leaving school with no qualification, it is vital for the education system to succeed for all children.
Ngā Kaikokiri Mātauranga endorses a boost in early childhood education funding to support increased participation of Māori children.
There will also be extra spending on lifting teacher quality, te reo Māori regeneration and culture, and building a Māori medium workforce.
There will also be more involvement of private training establishments to address the gap between Māori and non-Māori school leaving statistics, and an increase in Māori trade training and cadetships.
