Floating protest against Mighty River float
Meanwhile, the Mana Party is taking opposition to state asset sales to the water.
Mighty River Power lists on the share market at 12.30 today, after 113,000 retail investors participated in the float at $2.50 a share.
On Sunday morning a flotilla of water craft will travel from Hamilton to Ngaruawahia to protest the sale of the company, which has dams along the Waikato River.
Mana President Annette Sykes says as well as speaking out against privatisation, the flotilla will celebrate how the river has sustained generations of people from the tribes along its length.
"So they are having a waka flotilla, four waka on the awa, signs and placards making it clear that the waters of the Waikato belong to the people of the Waikato River. This is not over. Māori have protested over these matters since the Pakeha arrived and they will continue to protest until they have control of their ancestors," she says.
Ms Sykes says the Court of Appeal judgment in the water case means the government has unfinished business in recognising Māori treaty rights to water.
