Fish hui to look at new changes
Iwi fishing companies will be told they need to be more creative.
The companies gather in Auckland next week for the annual Māori Fisheries Conference.
Peter Douglas, the Chief Executive of Te Ohu Kaimoana Fisheries Settlement Trust, says pending legislative and regulatory changes, including new rules around the use of foreign charter vessels, have the potential to shave millions of dollars of the value of the settlement quota.
He says iwi will have to change the way they harvest their deepwater quota.
There is also pressure from consumers for assurances that fish is caught sustainably.
