Public Health Association wants school food plan debated
The Public Health Association is backing Hone Harawira’s Feed the Kids Bill as a way to generate ideas about providing food in schools.
Chief Executive Warren Lindberg says the momentum for providing food in schools is building, with an Expert Advisory Group to the Children’s Commissioner recommending free food in all low-decile schools.
He says referring the Education (Breakfast and Lunch in Schools) Amendment Bill to a select committee would give the public a chance to have its say.
Food insecurity is linked to poor health for children, including obesity and poor oral health, as well as to children’s educational achievement.
A Community Campaign for Food in Schools being launched today.
