Iwi concerns trim exploration offer

Opposition from iwi has led the Government to scale back the amount of land its opening up for oil and gas exploration in the East Coast and Taranaki.
David Binnie, the General Manager of New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals, says after consultation the number of onshore blocks in Taranaki was reduced from five to three and the size of the two onshore East Coast blocks was reduced.
However, the sizes of the offshore permits in the Taranaki, Canterbury and Great South Basins were unaffected by the iwi consultations.
For the first time a permit will also be offered in the Northland/Reinga offshore basin.
