Good innings over for Maori Battalion veteran

The Last Post sounded today for Arthur Brooking, a day after his companions were remembered at Anzac Day ceremonies around the country.
Mr Brooking, a member of C Company of the 28th Māori Battalion’s C Company, died on Tuesday, four days shy of his 94th birthday, at the Mary Doyle Retirement Home in Havelock North.
His funeral was held today at Hinerupe Marae in Te Araroa, the East Coast township from where he and three brothers left for war.
Mr Brooking was captured in Greece, but later escaped from a prisoner of war camp in Germany.
According to his funeral notice, he told family "I’ve had a good innings."
