Ngati Haua seeking Waharoa aerodrome
Ngāti Haua is seeking the return of a Waikato aerodrome that was compulsorily taken during World War 2.
Lawyer, Willie Te Aho, says the case is similar to the Raglan golf course, which was eventually returned after an occupation led by the late Eva Rickard.
He says as it prepares for its historic treaty settlement with the Crown, Ngāti Haua is talking to the Matamata Piako District Council about the future of the Waharoa aerodrome.
“Part of that solution is restoring the ownership of the Waharoa aerodrome back to the hapū and looking at a joint management, so continuing the public use and access,” he says.
Willie Te Aho says the aerodrome is right next to the Waharoa marae.
