Boost to Taupo clean-up

The Government has injected a further $3 million into cleaning up Lake Taupo.
Waikato Regional Council Chair Peter Buckley says the payment to the Lake Taupo Protection Trust will help it meet its aim of a 20 per cent reduction in the amount of nitrogen getting into the lake from manageable sources, such as leaching from farms and wastewater discharges.
The project is a partnership between councils, central government, Ngāti Tuwharetoa and farmers.
The trust buys land or assists farmers to change their land use, including converting 5,800 hectares of farmland to low-nitrogen leaching plantation forestry.
