More help needed for mothers
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall wants to see more support services for pregnant mums in South Auckland.
Ms Wall says the Counties Manukau District Health Board region accounts for 17 percent of babies who die before 27 days.
She says the DHB is working on solutions to problems identified by a team led by former health and disability commissioner Ron Paterson.
She says there is a real problem with women not accessing support before they have children.
“We don’t have enough leave maternity carers. We don’t have enough appropriate services within our community and there are lot of women and families who actually don’t know what’s available to them and what support they should get. It’s highlighted quite a few issues in terms of provisions whether it be Māori specific or Pacific specific,” Louisa Wall says.
