Māori link to stream marked
Wellington’s Māori heritage has been highlighted in a new public artwork.
Z Energy and Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust commissioned Ra Vincent to create a sculpture from bricks from an Victorian brick culvert discovered during construction of a new service station in Vivian St.
The culvert, dating to about 1870, channelled the Waimapihi Stream, which was named after the female ancestor Mapihi, who bathed in it.
Trust spokesperson Liz Mellish says the sculpture with its supporting display boards is a way to commemorate the stream, which now runs underground.
