Tamariki Māori at high risk of crash injury
Auckland Transport has warned that Māori and Pacific children are more likely to be injured in road crashes in the region than any other ethnic groups.
Analysis of hospital admissions from 2000 to 2008 published in the Australia and New Zealand Journal of Public Health showed road crash injury risk is highest among Māori in all age groups.
The injury risk is higher for those living in rural local board areas and people living in the southern Auckland urban area.
Researcher Jamie Hosking from the University of Auckland says it suggests vulnerable communities could really benefit from road safety prevention efforts, such as traffic calming and speed reduction.
Auckland Transport is working with 93 South Auckland schools on a Safe School Travel Plan that includes initiatives to improve road safety.
