Water Safety New Zealand says programmes like Active Post’s Kia Maanu, Kia Ora Māori Water Safety Education campaign are changing the way New Zealanders behave around water.
Chief Executive Matt Claridge says another initiative, Sealord Swim for Life, has so far helped about 135,000 New Zealand kids learn how to swim.
He wants to grow the programmes to reach more high risk communities.
The number of drowning this summer was 31, some 10 down from the five year summer average of 41.
Four in five of those who drowned were male.
