Sykes wants Devoy terminated from role

Mana President Annette Sykes says she will ask the Governor General and the Minister of Justice to terminate the appointment of former squash champion Dame Susan Devoy as race relations commissioner.
Ms Sykes says the job is about providing independent leadership and advice on race relations, including public education on the Treaty of Waitangi.
She says Dame Susan disqualified herself with a newspaper column last month in which she said Waitangi Day had been hijacked as a national celebration and was marred by political shenanigans.
Ms Sykes says National bypassed the proper process for appointing human rights commissioners, and ignored the requirement that the race relations commissioner have knowledge of the Treaty of Waitangi, the rights of Indigenous Peoples, and an understanding of race relations in New Zealand.
