PKW promotes contact with whenua

Taranaki Māori landowner Parininihi ki Waitotara Incorporation and Enviroschools are taking more than 100 pupils to a regional event at Pukeiti gardens today.
PKW General Manager Dion Tuuta hopes He Whenua, He Tangata, He Oranga Day will become an annual event.
He says many Māori kids in the region are not aware they are part of one of the largest land owners in Taranaki, and they struggle to feel connected to the whenua.
“With an increasingly urban society, there is potential for people to disconnect or to grow up without experiencing life on the land or life in the bush, which is why Parininihi ki Waitotara looked at creating a partnership with Enviroschools because their focus is on educating kids about the environment and sustainability,” he says.
Dion Tuuta says the students will learn about protecting native birds, take a rainforest walk and get a chance to sow seedlings to take home, as well as take away some great memories.
