Whānau ora lip service irks minister

The Minister for Whānau Ora says agencies need to put real resources into the kaupapa, rather than just talk about it.
Tariana Turia says the idea of seeing people in the context of the wider family is taking hold.
But she says some agencies are now saying they support the philosophy of strengthening the whānau but they won’t invest in it or change the way they work.
“So when they come out and say ‘we believe in whānau ora and the corrections department, we believe in whānau ora and the police department’, I know its humbug because they’re not prepared to invest anything in it. Until they understand what it really means and the investment that it will require, they cannot expect our health providers and social service providers, who don’t get any more money to do the extra work to do it for them,” says Tariana Turia.
