MWWL manager looking for fresh start
The new general manager of the Māori Women’s Welfare League is keen to encourage openness, dialogue and regeneration.
Awhimai Reynolds from Ngāti Mahanga and Tainui replaces Jacqui Te Kani, who died last October.
She says the 60-year-old organisation needs to bring younger women on board and take on their concerns.
She says it hasn’t always done that.
“I’ve been involved for 15 years and always been interested. I must admit though, in the last couple of years I was a little dissatisfied with the direction. But when we had the new national president appointed, Kataraina O’Brien – I heard her speak in Blenheim, she was inspiring. When this position came up, I wanted to be part of the change under her leadership”.
Awhimai Reynolds says a priority will be getting up a new website and social media strategy, so the league is more accessible to younger people.
