Family play a punch in the face
The director of a play which premiered at the Auckland Arts Festival says it felt like a punch in the face when she first read it.
Hui by Mitch Tawhi Thomas is about four brothers drawn together by the death of their father after years of living apart.
Rachel House says it’s a play that took Thomas years to write, and it was extensively work shopped, including winning the Adam Play Reading competition.
She says while at times it is very funny, it also tackles hard themes of identity and loss.
“It sort of felt like I’ve been punched in the face and it’s got that sort of feeling to it. I think it’s just because it’s full of heart and hard stuff like grief and dysfunctional family business. It's stuff that we can definitely all relate to,” says Rachel House.
Hui is at Q Theatre until Saturday.
