Everything Ka Pai for the Yoots

It’s a busy weekend for Wellington 12-piece The Yoots.
Tomorrow night, they’re the house band for Everything is Ka Pai, an Auckland Festival celebration of Māori anthems that also features Maisey Rika, Ria Hall, Hinewehi Mohi, Annie and Will Crummer, St Joseph's Māori Girls' Choir and Waka Huia.
On Sunday, they’re at Womad in New Plymouth accompanying a reformed Aotearoa Māori Choir.
Member Iain Gordon says the now 12-member band started as ska revivalists, but their explorations of classic waiata has brought a bigger audience.
”That’s why it’s so popular at different age groups because it is listened to by people now and then remembered by older people as a style of music. Bit of a dancing tune and remember it’s the most important thing to do. Dancing and singing,” says Iain Gordon from The Yoots.
Everything is Ka Pai will also feature a special appearance from the legendary John Rowles.
