A Far North iwi is considering blocking an attempt by the BBC’s Top Gear programme to film a supersonic car on 90 Mile Beach next month.
Ngāi Takoto and other Far North iwi are upset they weren’t consulted when the Far North District Council issued the permit, which will include closing off access during the filming.
Chair Mangu Awarau says the iwi sit on various committees with the council, so it should have been aware of who to talk to about the activities on Te Oneroa-ā-Tohe.
“The thing with these ballheads is that they never spoke to nobody. They just did their own thing and they probably think that they're still back a 100 years ago, where they can do what they want without consulting the people. Well we’ve got news for them. We’ll close that thing down, bang just like that,” says Mangu Awarau from Ngāi Takoto.
