Kumeroa’s battle inspires Golden Shearers
Cancer prevention was a winner at this year’s Golden Shears championship in Masterton.
Hastings shearer Rowland Smith won the shearing title by less than half a point from fellow Hawkes Bay shearers Dion King and John Fitzpatrick.
Smith donated his $3000 purse to cancer research in honour of his mother Christel, who died of the disease six years ago.
In the open wool handling class, former champion Joanne Kumeroa came a close second to Joel Henare despite being in the middle of chemotherapy for a cancer diagnosed last August.
Doug Laing from Shearing Sports New Zealand says it was an inspiring performance.
”The point that Joanne wants to make, is that everybody should get themselves checked. She said that it’s a result of her fight, many of her friends have gone out and got themselves checked and have found that they have issues. They are now handling these issues and are confident that it will soon be over and will recover quickly. This is really the point she wants to make and that everybody should get themselves checked as early as possible,” he says.
