Kura backing charter school model

Māori educationalist Pem Bird is counting on charter schools to lift Māori achievement.
Mr Bird told Parliament's Education and Science Select Committee that Māori and Pasifika groups are keen to set up charter or partnership schools to lift their children's educational performance.
He says the kaupapa is backed by the Te Maru ō Ngā Kura-ā-Iwi ō Aotearoa, the Iwi Education Authority, which represents iwi-run Māori immersion schools.
Iwi believe they can have more influence in charter schools and push for higher achievement.
The Authority has signed a Kawa Agreement with the Ministry of Education to ensure more support and better communication between the two groups.
