Cullen to help set path for kohanga reo

Former Labour deputy prime minister Sir Michael Cullen has been appointed as the independent advisor on the implementation of the Waitangi Tribunal’s recommendations in the kohanga reo claim.
Te Kohanga Reo National Trust Board co-chair Timoti Karetu says since the report came out in October, it has been working on the terms of reference for engagement between the Crown and the Board.
The report highlighted long-standing divisions between kohanga reo and the Education Ministry about its role within early childhood education.
The tribunal found that kohanga reo remains the principal institutional vehicle for passing on te reo me nga tikanga Maori from older generations to the youngest.
Dr Karetu says the board is looking forward to working with Dr Cullen and the Crown on new policy, funding and regulatory frameworks specific to Kohanga Reo, and the progression of a Kohanga Reo Bill.
