The Government is upping the minimum wage by 25 cents leaving its support parties divided on the issue.
The Māori Party says the increase on the first of April from $13.50 to $13.75 is pitiful.
Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell says a $16 an hour minimum wage would address some of the income inequality that is now a major threat to economic well being and social cohesion.
ACT leader John Banks says the increase will cause business failures and jobs losses.
