Dewes to keep Treasury on its toes
One of the new non-executive directors of Treasury says he’s looking forward to helping the Crown’s bean counters challenge their assumptions.
Whaimutu Dewes from Ngāti Porou and Ngāti Rangitihi also chairs pan Māori company Aotearoa Fisheries and serves on the boards of several Ngāti Porou ventures.
He says Treasury’s board is a new body set up to be similar to private sector boards in making management accountable for their performance.
“The most valuable contribution that a board member can make is the testing that management are correct in their assumptions and that they are seeking the best information knowledge to make their decisions. You become that sounding board; you become that sort of litmus test”. says Whaimutu Dewes.
Whaimutu Dewes says he’s looking forward to working alongside the other board members, including former Commonwealth Bank of Australia Chief Executive Ralph Norris, who has Ngapuhi whakapapa.
