Te Matatini Stage On The Move
What could be the largest Māori carving ever created in Aotearoa is on the move today.
The 30 metre, 26 tonne māhau is being moved from the New Zealand Māori Arts & Crafts Institute in Whakarewarewa to the Rotorua International Stadium, where it will frame the stage for Te Matatini in two weeks time.
Institute Director Karl Johnstone says a contingent of warriors will accompany the māhau as it leaves Te Puia about 10am this morning.
Te Matatini Director Darrin Apanui says after the kapa haka competition, it could be used for other events as a cultural doorway through which all things Kiwi can be showcased.
