Tainui tackles structural problems
It’s a big day for Waikato-Tainui, with the tribe gathering at Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia to consider whether it needs to change its governing structures.
The hui was called by King Tuheitia in an attempt to get over the divisions that has wracked the tribe in recent years.
He has chosen to go around the tribal parliament, Te Kauhanganui, and attempt to get grassroots support for direct intervention.
Tukoroirangi Morgan, who was appointed in December as the Kahui Ariki representative on the Te Ara Taura Executive Board, says it’s the most significant hui since a similar hui was called 30 years ago by Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu during a time of similar upheaval.
Today’s programme includes Tainui Group Holdings Chair Sir Henry Van Der Heyden and league player turned entrepreneur Tawera Nikau talking about achieving economic prosperity for tribe members, and Te Warena Tau and Rahui Papa on protecting tribal tikanga, culture and beliefs.
Tomorrow the hui will discuss how King Tuheitia and the Kingitanga movement will be in the future and how all the strands of social and economic aspirations, tribal tikanga and Kingitanga can be reflected in the tribe’s governance structures.
