Valentine’s Day hearing for Tame iti
Imprisoned Tūhoe nationalist Tame Iti is to have his first parole hearing on February 14th, raising the prospect he could be released before his appeal against conviction and sentence are heard.
The Supreme Court is still to set a date for hearing argument on whether it should hear the appeal.
Iti and Te Rangiwhiria Kemara were sentenced last May to 30 months in jail for weapons charges in relation to what the judge said were military-style training camps near Ruatoki in 2007.
A message posted on Wairere Tame Iti's Facebook account says as the hearing is set for Valentine’s Day, he wonders if the parole board will show him some love.
He also says he has given his television away and is instead reading New Zealand human rights lawyer Marianne Elliott's book about working in Afghanistan, Zen Under Fire, and Nelson Mandela's Road to Freedom.
