Shark livers strength of Kawhia Kai Fest

Organisers of the Kawhia Kai Festival hope this weekend's event will bring some positive news to the town.
Lloyd Whiu says locals are still upset with media coverage of an incident earlier this month, when the township's police officer was set upon when he tried to arrest a man on minor charges at the wharf.
He says thousands of people are expected at the Omiti Park Reserve on Saturday, and if past years are any indication, they will leave with smiles on their faces after sampling the traditional delicacies on offer.
“This year we've got Tītī, the old mutton bird, of course we got Kōki as well. Kōki being the shark liver and they only use the shark liver. Some use the liver out of the sting but some locals say it’s pretty strong so they leave the sting ray alone but they got after the piopio, the dog shark. That’s the better one with the liver and preparing that”. says Lloyd Whiu from the Kawhia Kai Festival.
