Ngāti Apa sharing the benefits
The new chair of Ngāti Apa says it's important to ensure the tribe's settlement benefits all its members.
Pahia Turia has taken over from Adrian Rurawhe, who steered the Rangitikei-based iwi through its treaty settlement.
He says that settlement was constructed to benefit all Ngāti Apa's constituents, including a cultural revitalisation package and papakainga housing development sites for each hapū.
The challenge now is to remain relevant post-settlement.
“I think you know we’ve got huge advantages that we not a huge iwi. We’ve got very strong relationships between our hapū. We’ve got some really good young leadership coming through and we’ve got a really strong skill base, I think we’re lucky we’ve got a good place to start but certainly understand that there’s alot of work going ahead also”.
Pahia Turia says he isn't in a hurry to follow his mother into national politics, as it's important to prove first that he can effect change among his own people.
