Lifetime preparing for iwi job
The new chair of Ngāti Apa says it’s a job he has been training for a lifetime.
Pahia Turia first went on the rūnanga when he was 17, more than 20 years ago.
The son of Te Tai Hauauru MP Tariana Turia says his mother made it clear her children had obligations and responsibilities that kept them at home.
Former Chair Adrian Rurawhe, who steered the Rangitikei iwi through its treaty settlement, has stepped down because of work commitments,
Mr Turia says Ngāti Apa aims to grow its asset base, while at the same time addressing the fundamental health and social service needs of people.
The chair is an unpaid part time role, and Mr Turia will continue his mahi as a director of Taipak Developments, which advises on health and social services.
