Harawira offer no horror show
Mana leader Hone Harawira says he’s serious about offering a merger with the Māori Party.
The offer has been made as the party he left in 2011 struggles with a leadership challenge by Te Ururoa Flavell on Pita Sharples.
Co-leader Tariana Turia has described it as a comedy show, but Mr Harawira says it’s an invitation he has issued every year.
"I just want it to be made clear that regardless of the personality differences, the principle of unity within Māoridom is more important to me and more important to Mana. So it's not political grandstanding, it's not a comedy show, it's not a horror show, it's a realistic attempt to try to rebuild a Māori political consensus," he says.
Hone Harawira says a merger would require the Māori Party to give up its ministerial posts and drop its support for a National-led Government.
