Whānau take brunt of suicide prevention
One of the presenters of a series of online seminars for Māori on suicide prevention says families are key to the effort.
Otago University Māori health lecturer Keri Lawson-Te Aho will present the first webinar next Tuesday.
She says mainstream suicide prevention strategies aren’t working for Māori, so communities like Kawerau, Tai Tokerau and Masterton are looking for their own responses.
She says they are looking for culturally relevant and safe methods.
"And the whole focus of the suicide prevention kaupapa is on whānau ora, the well being of our whānau, because at the end of the day as clinicians, as researchers, we can walk away from this kaupapa but our whanau is always there," Ms Lawson-Te Aho says.
People can register for the webinars through the Mental Health Foundation website.
