Scholarships building confidence in Māori managers
The chair of a trust which will spend half a million dollars this year on Māori tertiary scholarships says getting Māori into senior positions takes a long term strategy.
Te Putea Whakatipu Trust has 50 $10,000 scholarships on offer for students working towards degrees in business and management, fisheries and aquaculture science, agriculture and agribusiness.
Richard Jefferies says there is a lot of catching up to do
”For a long time, pre the treaty settlement period, we were kind of, not shut out but certainly left out of alot of decision making. Even though our own business was left out and I know alot of Māori trust and corporations have had other people, not Maori, running their operations. So I think there’s been quiet a long period of dormancy and it will take a little while to rebuild our confidence. Now is the time to really start to think about how we bring our young people through to fill these positions and I think the confidence is there now” says Richard Jefferies from Te Putea Whakatipu Trust.
