Māori Internet Society rebooted
The geeks are back.
The New Zealand Māori Internet Society has revived itself, drawing in other Māori information technology organisations that have sprung up in recent years.
Chairman Karaitiana Taiuru says the 15-year-old organisation had become a leaderless shell with no cause, so it needed a reboot.
Another founding member, Ross Himona, has come back on as kaumatua and other experts have joined the executive.
Mr Taiuru says it will focus on social media, with racist and derogatory comments about Māori becoming more prevalent.
It has worked with Netsafe to get Facebook to shut down racist pages.
The Māori Internet Society will also promote technical efforts to allow use of Te Reo Māori online, and encourage young Māori to pursue careers in technology.
