Golf young guns going for gold

Māori golf looks set for a bright future, with 18-year-olds taking the top spots at this year’s New Zealand Māori Championships at Taupo.
The contest between Wellington’s Cruize Wawatai and Jordan Golding from Mount Maunganui harked back to back the days when Phil Tataurangi and Michael Campbell dueled for the honours.
Strokeplay winner Wawatai, who plays for Paraparaumu Beach, started at the Titahi Bay Club coached by Campbell’s father Tom.
Golding from Ngāti Maniapoto, who beat Wawatai in the semi-final of the matchplay, already held the Māori under-19 title.
He went on to beat 16-year-old Joshua Dasent from Hawkes Bay in the final.
His big goal this year is to make the cut of the New Zealand Open, a new partnership between NZ Golf and NZ Māori Golf means he gets in the field.
Wawatai also has a full card of amateur tournaments to play over the next few months, and hopes to eventually go professional.
Meanwhile, Michael Campbell finished 17th equal at the weekend's Abu Dhabi HSBC, seven shots off the lead.
