Fish fund scholarships target careers on land

Māori who want careers on the land can get help from new scholarships set up by the Federation of Māori Authorities and Te Pūtea Whakatupu Trust.
The trust, which was set up as part of the Māori fisheries settlement, already funds 30 $10,000 Tawera scholarships for Māori enrolled in business, commerce or management degrees, and 10 Rona scholarships for students studying fisheries, aquaculture or marine sciences.
Chair Richard Jefferies says the 10 new Whānui scholarships, also of $10,000 each, acknowledges the need to build Māori capacity in farming.
He says there is growing pressure to get suitable Māori candidates for the new jobs needed to manage and grow Māori assets, including those coming from treaty settlements.
All 50 scholarship recipients are required to attend the trust’s annual conference, which has the theme of Charting Pathways for Māori Industry Futures.
