Spurned kina koha upsets iwi
Ngāi Tahu is upset that Toitu Otago Settlers Museum refused to serve out kaimoana that had been given by the iwi as a koha for last month’s official opening ceremony.
Koa Whitau-Kean from the museum’s Māori advisory committee says at least two types of seafood, including kina, were held back.
She says turning down koha is a gross insult to any iwi.
A statement from the Dunedin City Council says some of the donated seafood was found to be in a state which meant it could not be prepared safely for consumption.
It said the issue had been worked through and resolved with local rūnanga.
