Ngāti Ruanui launches environmental plan
Developers, businesses and councils in South Taranaki should have a better idea what they can and can’t do with the release of Ngāti Ruanui’s Iwi Environmental Plan.
Debbie Ngarewa-Packer from Te Rūnanga ō Ngāti Ruanui Trust says it has taken two years to develop the plan, with extensive consultation and discussion.
She says as the iwi with the largest number of oil and gas companies in its backyard, it’s important that everyone knows where the iwi stands.
“Quite often these sorts of entities have change of staff and we sort of have to go through the rigmarole as the same way as Ngāti Ruanui as the mana whenua, as the mana moana. This is who we are, so it avoids a whole lot of back tracking”. She says.
Debbie Ngarewa-Packer says under the Resource Management Act both regional and local councils need to take the plan into account when they amend their planning documents.
