Ngāti Whatua endorses crime stop plan
An Auckland iwi leader is rating a new iwi-police crime prevention strategy as one of the most exciting developments to come out of the year.
Naida Glavish from Te Rūnanga ō Ngāti Whatua says the Turning the Tide Strategy grew out of work being done by iwi like Ngāti Whatua, Ngāpuhi and Te Arawa to address Māori crime.
She says it will allow iwi to tackle not only the high numbers of Māori who come before the courts and end up in jail, it will also allow them to look at ways to bring down reoffending.
She says police and iwi need to work together to change behaviour, and also to look at the large number of Māori who are victims of crime.
