Whanganui champion Barney Haami dies
The Whanganui River has lost one of its champions.
Kaumatua Barney Haami has died at the age of 75, after a long illness.
He was a long-standing member of the Whanganui River Māori Trust Board, as well as chairing Te Rūnanga ō Tamaupoko and Wanganui District Council's consultation group with mid-river Māori.
He was also a member of the Taranaki/Whanganui Conservation Board, the Whanganui Māori Regional Tourism Organisation and other arts, culture and environment groups.
Barney Haami has been buried in Whanganui’s Aramoho Cemetery.
