Greens count wins from tough year
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei is rating delays in the Auckland Convention Centre project and the sale of state assets as political highlights for the year.
Ms Turei says the Greens' scrutiny over the concessions Sky City Casino is seeking to build the convention centre has forced the Government to proceed more cautiously.
She is also proud to be part of the coalition opposing the sale of shares in state owned energy companies.
"You know it was the (New Zealand) Maori Council taking the government to court that stopped this first set of sales happening. We now have the referendum petition, which 300,000 people have signed. The Government, on two of the major things it wanted achieved, the convention centre deal and selling off the first of the state assets, couldn't do it. We were either instrumental in that or a strong part in the process that stopped that from happening," Ms Turei says.
Another achievement was the Greens’ part in raising awareness of the growing problem of child poverty in New Zealand.
